Pearls: The Timeless Gems

Perhaps the most beloved gems of all time, pearls—both natural and cultured—come in an incredible array of colors. While white and cream are the most familiar, pearls can be found in every hue imaginable.

Natural pearls form around a tiny irritant inside certain mollusks, while cultured pearls are created when a bead or piece of tissue is deliberately inserted, prompting the mollusk to coat it with lustrous nacre. Whether natural or cultured, pearls are timeless treasures that captivate with their beauty and elegance.

Pearl Types

There are four major types of cultured whole pearls, each with its unique charm and characteristics:

Akoya Cultured Pearls

Akoya cultured pearls are the most familiar to many people in the U.S. and other Western markets. When you think of the classic pearl used in jewelry, especially single-strand necklaces, you’re likely picturing a white or cream-colored Akoya. These beautiful saltwater pearls are produced in Japan and China.

South Sea Cultured Pearls

Hailing from Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, South Sea cultured pearls are known for their impressive size and thick nacre, thanks to their long growth period. These pearls can range in color from white to silver to golden, depending on the type of oyster. Their rarity and luxurious appearance make them highly valued.

Tahitian Cultured Pearls

Primarily cultivated around the islands of French Polynesia (with Tahiti being the most famous), these saltwater cultured pearls are often called black pearls. They offer a stunning array of colors, from gray, black, and brown to overtones of blue, green, purple, or pink. Their exotic hues make them truly unique.

Freshwater Cultured Pearls

Freshwater cultured pearls are among the most popular and widely produced pearls. Known for their remarkable variety of sizes, shapes, and colors, they are a favorite among shoppers and jewelry designers. These pearls are usually cultured in freshwater lakes and ponds, with many pearls growing in a single oyster. China is the leading producer of freshwater cultured pearls, offering these gems at accessible price points.
